Set the Stage, Even If It’s Just You

Set the Stage, Even If It’s Just You

Seven little things for making an ordinary fall evening at home feel like somewhere you actually want to be.

There’s something about the first hint of fall that makes me want to stay home.

The funny thing is, where I live, the first hint of fall doesn’t necessarily mean fall weather. It can still be 90 degrees outside. But inside, I can turn on the lamps a little earlier. I can pull a throw over my lap, pour a glass of wine and put on a good movie. I can change the kitchen towels without digging a single box of decorations out of the garage.

And somehow, home starts to feel different.

I’ve always loved creating a home that feels good when people walk through the door. But lately I’ve been thinking about why we tend to save some of those little efforts for when someone else is coming over.

Why not put dinner on the pretty wood tray when it’s just me on the couch on a Tuesday? Why not use the good wine glasses? Why not light the candle, turn off the overhead lights and let the lamps make the room feel a little warmer?

Maybe setting the stage doesn’t always have to mean setting it for someone else.

My house is still a work in progress. It takes me a while to decorate because I have to find the things that feel right. I want to picture something in my home and feel something when I see it. And when those little pieces finally start coming together, there are moments when I walk through a room, catch it in just the right light and think, I really do love my house.

That’s the feeling behind these finds.

Not a fall makeover. Not a cart full of things you need. Just a few little touches that can make an ordinary morning, a Tuesday night or a Friday evening at home feel a little more special.

Start With a Slow Morning

There’s a certain kind of morning that makes staying home feel like the best plan you could have made.

Coffee in hand. A throw pulled over your lap. Maybe you’re curled up on the couch, or maybe you’ve made it outside to the porch because the morning air is finally starting to cooperate.

Nothing particularly exciting is happening. And that’s sort of the point.

I love the idea of making those ordinary moments feel just a little more intentional. The coffee tastes the same, but somehow drinking it from a mug you love makes it better. The couch is the same couch, but add a really good textured throw and suddenly you want to stay there awhile.

I loved these the second I saw them because they’re just different enough. The shape caught my attention, and I can picture wrapping both hands around one on a slow Saturday morning.

They’re the kind of thing I’m drawn to for Two Ten South: useful, but with enough personality to make an everyday ritual feel a little less everyday.

A throw is one of the easiest ways to change the feeling of a room without really decorating it at all.

I love the chunky texture of this one and the warmth it brings into a room. Toss it over the arm of the sofa or keep it within reach for that first morning when you can finally convince yourself it’s cool enough to need one.

And if it’s still 90 degrees outside? I won’t tell.

Let the Lighting Change the Mood

By evening, I want my house to feel different.

I’m a lamp person. Turn off the overhead lights, switch on the smaller lamps and suddenly the exact same room feels warmer. Once winter really arrives, I’ll have a fire going almost every night, a glass of wine nearby and a Hallmark movie playing over the fireplace.

But we don’t have to wait for winter to create that feeling.

Sometimes it’s simply turning the lights down a little earlier, letting a candle glow in the corner and deciding that an ordinary night at home deserves some atmosphere too.

There’s something about walking through your own house in just the right lighting and noticing the little things you’ve collected along the way. Those are the moments that make me stop and think, this is mine. I really do love my house.

Sometimes changing the mood is as simple as turning off the overhead lights.

These are exactly the kind of little lamps I love because they let you create that warm glow almost anywhere, without worrying about where the nearest outlet happens to be.

Put one on the kitchen counter, use a pair on the dinner table, move one onto the porch for drinks or let one add a little light to a darker corner of the room. I especially love the warm metal finish because it feels collected rather than overly modern.

And because they come as a set, you can move them around depending on where the evening takes you.

I wasn’t expecting a candle warmer to be one of my favorite finds for this story, but this one completely changed my mind.

It looks more like a pretty little lamp than something you’d normally think of as an appliance, which means I’d happily leave it sitting out. Add a favorite candle underneath and it becomes another layer of that soft evening light we’re trying to create.

Sometimes the best finds are the ones you weren’t looking for in the first place.

Set the Stage, Even on a Tuesday

I think we’re sometimes better at making things special for other people than we are for ourselves.

If friends are coming over, I’ll think about what we’re drinking, what I’m serving and how everything looks. I’m a planner by nature, mostly because I rarely have a refrigerator full of food or enough wine sitting around to suddenly entertain a crowd.

But if it’s just me? I can always figure something out. A snack from whatever is in the kitchen. A glass of wine if there’s a bottle open, or an Old Fashioned because I almost always have what I need to make one.

And it made me think: why shouldn’t I put it on the tray anyway?

There’s something about carrying a wood tray to the couch with a drink, dinner or a little charcuterie that makes the exact same Tuesday night feel more intentional. Use the pretty glass. Put on the movie. Pull the throw over your lap.

You don’t need company coming over to make home feel like somewhere worth being.

This is one of those simple pieces I can picture using a dozen different ways. Style it on the coffee table with a small lamp and a plant. Use it for wine and glasses when friends come over. Fill it with charcuterie. Or carry dinner to the couch when no one is coming over at all.

I love anything that can be both useful and beautiful enough to leave out, and this feels like one of those pieces.

I’m convinced the little details matter more on an ordinary night than they do on a special occasion.

These glasses caught my attention because of their shape. They’re a little unexpected, which is exactly what makes them feel special. I can picture them sitting on that wood tray with a bottle of wine, a small plate of something good and nowhere else you need to be.

And I think that’s the point. Don’t save the pretty glasses for company. If pouring your Tuesday night wine into one makes the evening feel a little better, use it.

Sometimes the Smallest Change Is Enough

For me, fall usually starts in the kitchen.

Not because I’ve unpacked the pumpkins or pulled boxes of decorations out of the garage. Usually, I haven’t done any of that yet. It starts because I need clean kitchen towels.

I keep my stack of seasonal towels somewhere easy to reach, so when I’m changing them out anyway, I’ll grab the fall ones. It takes about thirty seconds. But every time I walk back into the kitchen and see that little bit of warm color, it feels like the season has started.

Even if it’s still 90 degrees outside.

I think that’s why I love little changes like this so much. You don’t have to decorate an entire room to change how it feels. Sometimes one small thing is enough to make you notice your home differently.

Sometimes fall starts with nothing more than changing the kitchen towels.

I liked these towels because they bring in the warm, earthy colors I want this time of year without feeling overly seasonal. No big fall saying required. No pumpkins necessary.

They’re useful, they add texture and color to the kitchen, and when the season is over, they don’t suddenly feel out of place.

Make Home Worth Staying In

My house isn’t finished. Not even close.

It’s a fixer upper, and I’m learning that creating a home I love takes me longer than I sometimes wish it did. I can’t just fill a room for the sake of finishing it. I have to find the things that feel right.

But maybe that’s part of what makes those things matter when I finally find them.

Every once in a while, I’ll walk through the house when the lighting is just right and notice a few of those pieces coming together. Something I waited forever to find. A corner that finally feels like me. A room that’s slowly becoming what I pictured.

And I’ll think, this is mine. I really do love my house.

I want more of those moments. And I don’t think they have to come from a renovation, a perfectly decorated room or spending a lot of money.

Sometimes it’s the lamp you turn on instead of the overhead light. The fall towels you pulled from the stack that morning. The throw over your lap. The wine poured into the pretty glass.

Sometimes it’s putting dinner on a tray on a Tuesday night simply because you can.

Set the stage even if no one is coming over.

Use what you already have. Add something new when you find the piece that gives you that feeling. Let your home come together slowly.

And most of all, make sure the person who lives there every day feels welcomed by it too.

ONE SMALL THING

Tonight, don’t buy anything.

Turn off the overhead lights. Turn on the lamps. Pour whatever you’re drinking into a glass you love. Put your snack or dinner on something pretty instead of carrying it in from the kitchen the usual way.

Then sit down and enjoy your own house for a while.
