The Friday Edition No. 04: Three Months From Now

Three months is long enough for something to change, but close enough that you can almost picture yourself there.

October always makes me want to do things.

Maybe it’s the first cooler morning. Maybe it’s knowing the holidays are coming. Maybe it’s realizing there are only a few pages left on the calendar before we start another year.

Last week, we talked about choosing a little direction for October. Not creating an entirely new life. Just deciding what deserves a little more of our attention.

But I’ve been thinking about what happens if we keep going.

Not perfectly. Not every day. Just enough.

Because three months from now, it will be January.

And I wonder what might feel different by then.

Maybe the project you’ve been staring at will finally be finished.

Maybe you’ll have a little more money saved.

Maybe you’ll have spent more evenings around a table with people you love.

Maybe you’ll feel stronger because you started walking a few mornings a week.

Maybe the idea you keep thinking about will finally exist somewhere other than in your head.

Or maybe nothing about your life will look dramatically different from the outside.

But you’ll know you kept a promise to yourself.

And sometimes I think that’s the change that matters most.

ONE SMALL THING

Not ten things.

One.

Send the email.

Move a little money into savings.

Clear the shelf that has been driving you crazy.

Take the walk.

Make the appointment.

Invite someone over.

Buy nothing today.

Open the blank document.

Put the first coat of paint on the wall.

There are so many things we postpone because we imagine the entire project instead of the first ten minutes.

This weekend, choose one thing that future you might quietly be grateful you started.

You don’t have to finish it.

Just make it easier to keep going.

SOMETHING WE’RE LOOKING FORWARD TO

There is a point every year when fall stops being something we’re decorating for and starts being something we can actually feel.

The morning air is cooler.

The light changes earlier.

You reach for a sweatshirt without immediately regretting it by 9 a.m.

Dinner starts sounding better simmering on the stove than coming off the grill.

And sitting outside with a cup of coffee or a glass of wine becomes something you want to linger over instead of escape from.

That’s the part I wait for.

Not necessarily the pumpkins or the calendar telling me it’s October.

Just that first stretch of days when the season finally seems to catch up with us.

FOR THE WEEKEND

It doesn’t have to be a project.

In fact, maybe it shouldn’t be.

Open the windows if the weather cooperates.

Turn on the lamps before the sun goes down.

Make something that cooks slowly.

Put on music while you straighten the kitchen.

Take your coffee outside.

Light the candle you’ve been saving.

Use the room you usually walk past.

Sometimes we spend so much time thinking about what we’d like to change about our homes that we forget to enjoy the parts that are already good.

This weekend, let home be somewhere you actually want to stay awhile.

THIS WEEKEND

If you’re looking for an easy plan:

Friday night: Pick up dinner instead of making it complicated. Open a bottle of wine, make an Old Fashioned or pour whatever feels like the end of the week.

Saturday morning: Coffee somewhere you can sit for a while. A farmers market, a yard sale, a walk through a favorite store or nowhere at all.

Saturday night: Make the first cozy dinner of the season. Chili, soup, pasta, something in the slow cooker. Anything that makes the house smell good.

Sunday: Give your three-month-from-now self 30 minutes. That’s it. Do one small thing that makes Monday, next month or January a little easier.

And then let the rest of Sunday still be Sunday.

WORTH SAVING

This week on Two Ten South, we talked about creating a home you love before you can afford every single thing you want for it.

Because sometimes home comes together through the thing you found secondhand, the piece you’re using “for now,” and the thing you’ve decided is worth waiting for.

And we also opened up my Amazon cart.

Not a list of things I suddenly wanted because they went on sale, but the things I actually own and love, have bought more than once, and a few I’ve been watching long enough to know I genuinely want them.

UNTIL NEXT FRIDAY

Three months can feel like no time at all.

It can also be enough time for a lot of small things to add up.

So maybe we don’t need to ask ourselves where we want to be by January.

Maybe the better question is:

What could I begin now that I’d be glad I didn’t wait another three months to start?

Pick one.

We’ll see where it takes us.

Until next Friday,
