The Friday Edition No. 01: The Weekend Starts at Home

A little note for Friday evening, when the week starts to loosen its grip and the weekend finally feels like yours.

There’s something about Friday somewhere between five and six o’clock.

Even if I’m not completely finished working, there’s a sense of relief that comes with Friday evening. Almost like getting a little bit of your energy back simply because the weekend is sitting there in front of you.

I work in real estate, so for a long time weekends didn’t necessarily mean weekends. There was always something happening, someone calling, somewhere to be. And I used to love having plans.

But as I’ve gotten older, my idea of a really good weekend has changed.

Some of the best ones now are the weekends when I look at my calendar and there is absolutely nothing on it.

There’s a peace that comes with that.

Home has become the place where I can be quiet and still for a little while. Sometimes I need that time completely to myself. Other times I want people filling the kitchen and sitting around the house. I’ve realized I love both.

Maybe that’s what I love most about Friday. It feels like the moment when the responsibilities of the week pause and, for a little while, the time is mine to create.

ONE SMALL THING

It doesn’t have to be anything big.

For me, it might mean ordering dinner instead of cooking, opening a bottle of wine or making an Old Fashioned and searching for something new to watch.

The little lamps around my house are already on, but as evening comes I turn on a few more. Then, as the night gets later, I slowly start turning them back off.

Once we get into fire season, I use even less light because I want to see the glow from the fireplace.

That tiny change in the house signals something to me.

The day is over. The weekend is here.

Then finish the section with:

Your one small thing this Friday: Change the atmosphere. Turn off the overhead lights. Turn on the lamps. Pour something you like. Sit somewhere you normally rush past.

You don’t have to have plans to make the evening feel special.

SOMETHING WE’RE LOVING

I’m starting to think I need a really beautiful tray.

Not because a tray is going to change my life, but because there’s something about putting your drink, a little snack and maybe one of those tiny lamps on a tray that makes sitting down for the evening feel a little more intentional.

And that’s exactly the kind of thing I want to share here. Things that aren’t just more stuff for the house, but things that might actually change how we enjoy it.

This warm wood serving tray feels just right for it. Leave it on the coffee table or ottoman, then add whatever Friday night happens to look like: wine and cheese, an Old Fashioned and a bowl of cashews, or even leftover guacamole and chips.

FOR THE WEEKEND

My ideal version might have aged Gouda, peppered salami, cashews and a glass of Cabernet.

But here’s the truth.

Sometimes the Friday night snack board is leftover guacamole and chips.

And I think that counts.

The point isn’t to create a Pinterest-perfect charcuterie board every Friday. Open the refrigerator. Find a few things you actually want to eat. Put them on a board or plate, pour something you like and take it somewhere comfortable.

That’s dinner.

THIS WEEKEND

This weekend feels like one of those nice in-between September weekends.

Friday might start with a glass of wine at the bar of a favorite restaurant before heading home for a quiet evening.

Saturday means Georgia football, maybe a pot of boiled peanuts and a few dips if people end up coming over. It’s still hot enough here that the pool will probably get some use, too.

But I may be looking forward to the mornings most.

They’re finally getting a little cooler. The kind where you can open all the windows and let fresh air move through the house before the heat settles in for the day.

Our farmers market has just started back, so after a slow morning at home, I might wander through there. Maybe stop at a garage sale or two. Get some steps in. Find a little inspiration.

Or maybe do none of it.

That’s the nice thing about a weekend with nowhere you absolutely have to be.

Slow weekend morning on a Southern lakefront porch with coffee, fresh peaches, hydrangeas and morning sunlight.

WORTH SAVING

If you’re craving that same feeling at home this weekend, this week’s story is:

Because we don’t always need to wait until company is coming to use the good glasses, make something look pretty or create a little atmosphere.

Sometimes we’re reason enough.

UNTIL NEXT FRIDAY

Maybe your weekend is packed.

Maybe there’s absolutely nothing on your calendar.

Either way, find one little moment that feels like yours.

Open the windows. Make the drink. Put the snacks on a tray. Sit outside for ten extra minutes. Leave your pajamas on a little longer Saturday morning.

Whatever it is, make it your #OneSmallThing.

And if you find yours, I’d love to know:

What’s your one small thing this weekend?

See you next Friday.
